Eighty-two years ago this week, Lindsborg celebrated the formal dedication of the Swensson Memorial Band Shell with a live performance by the Bethany College Band. Born out of the Works Progress Administration (WPA), native stone and the muscle of men who were eager to be employed during the Great Depression, the Band Shell was a marvel of design and function that still shines today. Tim Stewart, president of the Smoky Valley Historical Association, says the frigid winter of 1937 did not discourage the townspeople from forging ahead with the project that had an estimated cost of just over $11,000.
